Volkswagen Vento vs Hyundai Verna - Comparison of the two hot Diesel Sedans

Compare Volkswagen Vento with Hyundai Verna

With the success of Volkswagen India's first car to the masses, the Polo, the company is looking to gain stronghold in the entry level sedan category, with the lauch of Vento, a Polo with a boot. We have already seen a few "booted" sedans like the Swift Dzire and Tata Indigo Manza. The boot job in Dzire is nothing less than ugly and that of Manza is acceptable, but with Vento , the boot integration is absolutely spot on. It looks like a proper sedan from all angles and the front aggressive stance makes it a real stunner.

Meanwhile Hyundai has already launched a facelifted version of Verna, named Verna Transform. The specs are basically the same, except for a bad looking new front end and grill and some other minor changes. So in the looks department it is the Volkswagen all the way. But what makes this comparison important is the new diesel engine in Vento. Since the launch of Verna Crdi 1.5, it has been the best diesel engine in a sub 10lakh sedan (or even higher) but the Vento's diesel engine is more than capable of competing with that of Verna. So lets get into the technical specification first.

Both cars have lacklustre petrol engines and so here we are comparing only the diesel variants. The verna has a maximum of 108bhp power while Vento has 104bhp. The verna's crdi engine is a stonker with amazing pulling power after the turbo kicks in at 1900rpm. It has been the high point for Verna's popularity and it was unrivalled for a long time.

The vento has 104bhp of power, but as opposed to Vernas 235nm of torque, it has a class leading 250 Nm of spinning power. And it comes at a much lower rpm of 1500. This makes the Vento's engine to have better driveability and it more than compensates for the 4bhp power Verna has over it.

The verna was never known for its driving dynamics. The steering feedback is pathetic and handling is only average. The vento scores on that front too with amazing handling abilities and a better power steering. But vento's problems lie in the pricing. Although base models are competitively priced, they lack many features and the High end version is a bit over priced. So it all boils down to the type of customer. If you are looking for a Value For Money car, Verna could be your option, and Hyundai has a fantastic after sales network. But the vento is the better car, from a drivers point of view and if you have those extra bucks, go for the Volkswagen.

The petrol entry level sedan segment will see more competition with the release of Fiat Linea T-jet with a turbo charged petrol engine.

Verna matches Vento in every feature despite three year old and Vento is more noisy than quiet Verna. VW has 50 odd dealers across india. Germans are known for class but Vento is budget car so compromises are there even at higher costing than Verna. And if you see 2011 Verna launched in other parts of the world Indian Vento comes no way near.

I hate to disagree with you vicky. But the fact is Verna's USP is its superb diesel engine. But the Vento diesel is even better. Compared to Verna, Vento looks better and ride and handling is also superior in Vento. So i should say, Vento is a better car. But the VW service is pathetic!

Vicky 18 months ago

Very truly said not only service but maintainence cost is sky high as in the case of polo initial hype is dying so is the sale of polo neither petrol polo nor diesel polo is no where near i20 lets wait and watch how much diesel Vento make a mark in Sedan segment as in petrol no car can comes near to Honda city.I am driving Verna for the last four months and at that time i know Vento is coming but after its launch i went to the dealer nearby even after goingthrough Vento and its interiors no sales person even attended or just enquired at that time i was satisfied that i made a good decision.

I could not agree more with the attitude towards prospective customers that VW has. I wanted to have a test drive of a vento and had to approach the VW show room in west bangalore 3 times and i have still not got a test drive. When i approach the car there is no person coming over to explain the features or superiority of the car over its competitors. Precisely why i am now feeling that after buying the car also the experience may not be good.

Quite the opposite with hyundai and liked the Verna. Probably would go for a verna as against a vento. I am planning for a car in that range and probably would settle for a verna.

Sanjeev 17 months ago

I test drove both the vehicles few weeks back. While Verna has good engine, it does not match at all with Vento on pick up, ride & handling and looks ( looks quite ugly).

I bought Vento 4 weeks back, its been great so far.

Yazadship 17 months ago

I just did a test drive of the Vento 1 hr back.

I want to upgrade from my 3 yr old Indigo and have been looking only at Diesels (my avg running is about 1500 - 1600 Kms per month - and it only seems the difference between petrol and diesel will continue to increase).

So I checked the Linea out yesterday (just for fun i also took a TD on the new T-Jet plus (that car is awesome btw) and the trim levels on that car (for the price) are amazing - the accelearation/power/torque being considerably poorer than any other car in its class. Comparatively even though the Vento was very impressive, the Trim levels that one would expect of a car in this price range were just not there. No Steering mounted controls, no USB connection for the Music player (The sales person told me I could exchange the player to get that feature - 0ff course at an additional 12-40 thousand.!!). And nothing like the Blue&me system that is present on the Linea (even the Manza now offers it - so why cant a company like VW?). Rear leg room is much better in the Vento. Also even in the Highline model 9the top-end version) there is no "distance to Empty" figure on the dial. The diesign and styling of the Vento could have been inproved by giving it a slightly different nose than that of the Polo. I mean people who buy a 10 lakh car dont want others to mistake it for a 6 lakh car from the front!! Look at how Fiat designed the Line even though its basically based on the Punto Platform.

Still, at that price range a lot comes down to perceptions and everyone has to agree that VW definitely has been perceived as a better car any other carmaker (except the merc, beemers and audis) and just asI was slowly tilting towards the Vento, the sales lady finally decides to tells me that the delivery period of this car is anywhere between 4 to 5 months !!!

Sorry hub i dnt agree wid u on da point dat vento is better dan verna.despite of its less impresiv look verna is far better dan stretchd noisy polo i.e vento.

vicky 16 months ago

Absolutely true Vento is noisy and only one dealer per major city people are lined up either for delivery or for service or for some what repairs spare parts are also scarce as for the new product and off course we are at the mercy of dealers ever time ethier for cost he can ask even sky so better buy is Verna in my opinion.

Polo is noisy because the engines are three cylinder units. Vento has proper four cylinder engines and the noise is as good as any modern diesel engine. Usually the Indian buyer is not bothered about ride quality and handling of the car, because they are not aware of such factors. But for informed people, Vento is better than Verna as a car. But in India, Volkswagen service is poor and comes nowhere close to Hyundai, so if you prefer peace of mind and quick and inexpensive service, go for Verna. If you really love driving , Vento is the car for you, because Verna is horrible in the "Fun to Drive" department. It rides like a boat!

This is a good comparison between the two popular model. But I think VW's Vento will lead the race as it contains high features in overall sphere.

SUDHEER 8 months ago

VERNA FLUIDIC IS SOFT TO DRIVE WHERE AS VENTO ENGINE IS NOISY AND LITTLE HARD TO DRIVE, MOSTLY VENTO HAS VERY LOW BOOKINGS BUT THE DEALERS ARE CREATING HYPE THAT IT HAS DEMAND AND WAITING PERIOD IS 4 MONTHS BUT THAT IS NOT TRUE

vento is the best and family car with more space and good pick up ,and it is simple design than verna, and the gauge of vento is better than verna, it has long sevice every 15,000 km or 1 year ,laser welding technology, good engine performance ,all customers are telling that engine is a noise but it is not a noise it is a sound like lion ,think +ve, this is the best car in sedan

Kanav 2 months ago

Vento has a super pickup. If u drive between 80-120 kph it zooms like anything.Vento is stuffed with good features, powerful engine mileage upto 21-25kmpl.If u thnk that verna is better option then u are wrong

No comparision of the german's build and technology, no quaility product is given by verna fludic. so please first drive and feel the pleasure of Vento then comment about both the products.

JETHU 3 days ago

VERNA IS SO HOT & SEXY LOOK, NO COMPARISION OF VERNA WITH VENTO BECAUSE VENTO FRONT LOOK LIKES POLO,VENTO DOES'T LOOK LIKE A SEDAN CAR.
